Most people accidently “fall” into a career they dislike, and often due to their financial situations, feel stuck in a rut. Interestingly, a recent survey found that over 80% of workers are disengaged with their career. The average person spends a third of their life in work. To spend that amount of time in a job you do not like can be very disheartening. Do you love or hate your job? Do you spend the majority of your week doing something you don’t enjoy? Do you want to find something that gives you a buzz?
Everyone has something unique, and the knowledge of your personality can be a great help towards finding a career that gives you purpose.
Let Your Personality Choose Your Career.
Enjoyment in work and by extension life depends on how well your career matches your unique personality. Research shows that the most traditional jobs are not always the most enjoyable. You should find your best fit, and it starts with knowing the true you. The Myers-Briggs Typology Indicator (MBTI) and the John L Holland Theory of Careers have been a great source of information one can use to find your fit.
Do you ever have that feeling like something is not right but cannot put your hand on it? Chances are your personality is not the right fit for your current environment. I had that feeling, and in hindsight, I can now understand my continued discontentment for my place of employment. For example, I have an ISFP (Introverted, Sensing, Feeling, Perceiving) personality. I am more prone toward working with my hands and have a strong aesthetic appreciation for art. I don’t like to feel “box in’ and value freedom to be innovative and creative and I always find ways to push my passions.
I can remember working at a store in a mall from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm attending to the handful of customers entering the store. A day seemed like a year, and it drove a hole inside of my heart, and I did not know why. Now picture someone who likes to work with their hands and love the outdoors, cooped up in a small store all day. I was literally dying to get out of there every day.
When armed with an understanding of your strengths, weaknesses, values, interest, etc. you are in an excellent position to pick a career that can be very rewarding. It's critical to understand what is imperative to your development and as such, the indicator can provide a detailed look at your personality.
Whether you're a young adult trying to find your place in the world, or a not-so-young adult trying to find out if you're moving along the right path, it's important to understand yourself and the personality traits which will impact your likeliness to succeed or fail at various careers.
It is truly fascinating to understand your purpose; life becomes so more meaningful. Most people just find this hard to figure out. Everyone have a mixture of personality traits; something makes us stress while other things motivate us. For one, working in a messy environment is highly stressful, for someone else the same workplace is stress-free.
Once you understand you, life becomes free. We spend a lot of our time at work and so it is important to get these issues right, or we could spend a lot of hours unhappy, unproductive and unfulfilled.
